Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 435 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.
1) On December 5, 2012, K-9 Sergeants noticed a vehicle traveling at a slow rate and weaving in front of the Fire Station at Rogers State Prison. K-9 Sgts. Stopped the vehicle and smelled a strong odor of alcohol. Civilians Melissa Curvin and Edward Carpenter consented to a search of their vehicle. A bag was found containing 50 packages of tobaccos and one (1) roll of electrical tape. Civilians Curvin and Carpenter were arrested by the Tattnall County Sheriff's Office.
2) On December 8, 2012, visitor Jessica Tucker and Richard Dahlheiner were caught passing a small balloon of marijuana to a Smith State Prison inmate. The Glennville Police Department arrested both visitor Tucker and Dahlheiner.
3) On December 8, 2012, visitor Angela Jones could not clear the metal detector to get into the Autry State Prison visitation area. Visitor Jones consented to a search. Two (2) taped balloons of marijuana was found on her person. The Mitchell County Sheriff's Department was notified and Visitor Jones was arrested. Visitor Jones rode to Autry SP with another visitor by the name of Jerryl Davis. The vehicle of visitor Davis was searched and officers found more marijuana. Visitor Davis was also arrested.
4) On December 9, 2012, during visitation at Hancock State Prison the control room officer noticed that visitor Lakshia Griffin put an object in an inmate's chip bag. As staff approached the inmate, the other visitor Stephen Styles, Jr. took the bag into his possession. Staff asked for the bag, visitor Styles, Jr. refused but finally gave the bag to staff. The bag contacted one (1) balloon of THC. The Hancock County Sheriff's Office was called and searched visitor Styles, Jr.'s vehicle. A loaded handgun, shotgun and knife were found in plain sight. Additionally, a small amount of THC was found in the console and a large amount of alcohol was found in the vehicle's truck bed. Civilians Stephen Styles, Sr., Johnathan Styles and visitors Stephen Styles, Jr. and Lakshia Griffin were all arrested.
