1) On October 28, 2013 at Smith State Prison, Officer Kelsie Burrus was arrested after a visual body search conducted by prison staff revealed she was concealing approximately 10 ounces of marijuana on her person. Five packages of marijuana were concealed in camouflage tape and hidden inside her bra, spandex shorts and a homemade belt taped around her waist underneath her clothing. She was taken into custody by the Glennville Police Department.
2) On November 2, 2013 at Autry State Prison, security staff smelled a strong odor of marijuana on visitor David Smith Sr. He refused to consent to a search but when questioned, admitted he had tobacco. Further investigation revealed that David Smith was in fact Stephen Lowe, a convicted felon, and he had presented fake identification to prison staff. He was taken into custody and searched, and a plastic bag containing several small balloons filled with tobacco and marijuana were found on his person.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
