Contraband Arrests at GDC Facilities
**MORE THAN 729 CIVILIANS AND 160 STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED TO DATE FOR ATTEMPTING TO INTRODUCE CONTRABAND INTO GDC FACILITIES.**
- On July 4, 2014 at Baldwin State Prison, staff observed an inmate receiving a package from visitor Kenya Brightwell. The package contained marijuana. The Milledgeville Police Department was notified and arrested visitor Kenya Brightwell for crossing the prison guard line with drugs.
- On July 7, 2014, former Correctional Officer Sharon Cooper was sentenced to serve five years of a 20 year sentence for her May 18, 2013 arrest in Washington County for bringing contraband into the facility for an inmate at the facility. Officer Cooper admitted she smuggled an alcoholic beverage mix of Vodka and Kool-Aid, two cell phones, cell phone batteries, two packs of black and mild cigars, and various other food items intended for an inmate. Officer Cooper was criminally charged with the following felonies: violating Oath of Public Office, violating the GDC Employee Standards of Conduct, Crossing the Guard Lines with Drugs without the Warden's Consent, Trading with Inmates without the Warden's Consent, Criminal Attempt to Commit a Felony, and Participation in Criminal Gang Activity.
The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
