11 Offenders Complete Automotive Program

Graduates receive certificates in Automotive Light Repair and Maintenance

FORSYTH, Ga. – On April 27, Burruss Correctional Training Center hosted their third Automotive Service of Excellence (ASE) graduation ceremony.  Eleven graduates received certificates in Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair program (ALR) from Central Georgia Technical College in Macon, Ga.

“We are grateful to our partners at Central Georgia Technical College for helping make this program a success,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “Our goal is to continue to provide offenders with marketable skills, to assist them in obtaining employment once they return to society.”

ALR is an entry level Technical Certificate of Credit (TCC) educational program designed to teach the essential skills necessary to enter the automotive technician workforce.  The course in broken down into four models: Automotive Technology Introduction, ALR1, ALR2 and ALR3. It is modeled after the NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Educational Foundation) and ASE (National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence) standards. The course takes approximately six months to complete and upon graduation, offenders are awarded 20 credit hours. The types of jobs available with the ALR certificate include tire changing and balancing, working at oil change centers or brake and muffler shops, and many other entry-level positions.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
