New Warden Named at Johnson State Prison - John Jeanes reassigned

Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the reassignment of John Jeanes as Warden of Johnson State Prison effective July 1, 2013. The facility is located in Wrightsville, Georgia. As Warden, Jeanes will be responsible for overseeing 288 staff members and 1,612 medium security inmates.

"Jeanes has more than 27 years of experience with the Department," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "We look forward to his continued leadership at Johnson State Prison."

Jeanes began his career with the Department as a Correctional Officer in 1985 at Rivers State Prison. In 1987, he transferred to Bostick State Prison and then to back to Rivers State Prison where he served as a Correctional Officer. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1990, Lieutenant in 1991 and then to Captain in 1994 at Rivers State Prison. In 1997, he was promoted to Deputy Warden of Security at Dodge State Prison then served in the same capacity at Bostick, Scott and Washington State Prisons. In 2011, he was promoted to Warden of Lee State Prison. Later in that year, he transferred to Calhoun State Prison where he most recently served as Warden.

Jeanes attended Georgia College and State University where he studied History and International Studies. He completed Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training and Pre-Command Training.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
