New Assistant Superintendent at Bleckley PDC Named - Melisa Thompson Appointment

FORSYTH, Ga - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Melisa Thompson to Assistant Superintendent of Bleckley Probation Detention Center effective August 16, 2013. As Assistant Superintendent, she will responsible for the day to day operations of the facility and will represent the facility in the absence of the Superintendent.

"Melisa's knowledge and experience will serve her well in this new position," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "We look forward to watching her excel in her new role."

Thompson joined the department in 2000 as a Counselor at Telfair State Prison. In 2005, she was transferred to Pulaski State Prison and served as Counselor for four years to female inmates. Thompson was then promoted to Chief Counselor at Wilcox State Prison in 2009, where she most recently served.

Thompson received her Bachelor's degree from Mercer University and completed Basic Management and Advanced Management Training. She is also a recipient of the GPAI Leadership Award.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
