New Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment Named - Gary Caldwell Promoted

Forsyth - Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Brian Owens announced the promotion of Gary Caldwell to Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment of Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison effective October 16, 2013. As Deputy Warden, Caldwell is responsible for the supervision of education, health services, library, counseling and mental health counseling at the Special Mission male facility located in Jackson, GA.

"Gary has dedicated over eight years of faithful service to the Department," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "He will bring a wealth of knowledge that will greatly benefit the staff and inmates at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison."

Caldwell began his career with the Department in 2005 as a Counselor at Hancock State Prison. He was promoted to Staff Development/Training Coordinator with the Instructional Systems Unit in 2007. He transferred, in 2008, to Atlanta Transitional Center and served as a Counselor. In 2009, he transferred to Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison and served as a Diagnostic Counselor. Caldwell returned to Atlanta Transitional Center in 2010 as a Work Release Counselor, and was promoted to Chief Counselor at Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Prison, where he most recently served.

Caldwell received an Associate of Arts degree from Gordon College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and a Master of Public Administration in Management Systems degree from Georgia College and State University and a Doctorate of Public Administration degree from Capella University. Gary is also POST IT certified.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 60,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
