GDC Honors Past Employee - J.M. "Bob" Plemons Honored with Legacy Award

FORSYTH - Ga. - The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) awarded Board of Corrections member Bob Plemons with the Legacy Award at the Tenth Annual GDC Awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the State Offices South at Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia.

"Bob has been an instrumental asset to the Department throughout his 14 years of service," said Commissioner Brian Owens. "He will forever be an ambassador for the Department of Corrections."

The Legacy Award is presented to an individual who has committed a lifetime of service to the Department and has throughout the years made significant contributions to the agency.

Plemons began his career on a local level, when he became a Purchasing Agent in Catoosa County in 1973. In 1991, he was appointed as a board member for the Board of Corrections and served until 1996. After serving 20 years in Catoosa, he became County manager of Gilmer and then in 1998 he became Special Projects Manager for Chattooga County. In 2000, Plemons began his career with the Department as an Administrative Specialist I in Engineering. In 2004, he was promoted to Manager II and that same year also became Assistant to the Director of Engineering and Construction Services. He was promoted in 2006 to Assistant Director, Chief of Staff of the same unit and in 2009 assumed additional duties as legislative liaison for the Department. In May 2013, he retired from the Department and in the summer of 2013, Governor Nathan Deal reappointed him to the Board of Corrections.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 guests. Making the award presentation with the Commissioner were Assistant Commissioner Timothy C. Ward, Board of Corrections Vice Chair Rose Williams, and special guest speakers Mercer University Athletic Director Jim Cole and Mercer University Men's Basketball Head Coach Bob Hoffman.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
