29 Offenders Receive High School Diplomas

GDC continued partnership with Foothills Education Charter High School

FORSYTH, Ga. – On June 29, twenty-nine young men received their high school diploma at Burruss Correctional Training Center (BCTC) in Forsyth, GA, after completing the Foothills Charter High School program.

“Thanks to the hard-working students, dedicated staff, and our partners at Foothills, we doubled the number of Charter High School graduates this year,” said Commissioner Dozier. “This diploma affords the offenders a second chance at success upon their reentry into society.”

Prior to 2015, GDC only had the opportunity to provide offenders GED programming. GDC now has the ability to offer offenders, under the age of 21, the chance to obtain a high school diploma through a partnership with Foothills Education Charter High School.

The Charter High School program officially began in September 2015 at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, GA. The program at BCTC is the second within the Georgia prison system, starting in 2016, and a new program is scheduled to start at Phillips State Prison in Buford, GA, in September 2017.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
