Sandersville Resident Named Warden - Stanley Williams Appointed Warden at Georgia State Prison

Forsyth- Commissioner Brian Owens announced the appointment of Stanley Williams as Warden of Georgia State Prison effective January 1, 2015.  The facility is located in Glennville and houses Close Security male offenders.  As Warden, Williams will be responsible for overseeing 380 staff members and 1500 offenders.

“Warden Williams has worked his way up through the ranks since joining the Department,” said Commissioner Brian Owens.  “I confident he will continue to set the example for his staff,” added Owens. 

Williams joined the Department in 1985 as a Correctional Officer at Rivers State Prison.  In 1992 he was promoted to Sergeant at Washington State Prison and was later promoted to Lieutenant and Captain.  In 1997, he was promoted to Unit Manager at Rogers State Prison and in 2004, to Deputy Warden of Security at Baldwin State Prison.  In 2010, he became the Warden at Lee State Prison.  His most recent assignment has been Warden at Smith State Prison. 

Williams received a Criminal Justice Certificate from Columbus State University and is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree at Thomas University. He has completed the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training, Basic Management Training, Correctional Leadership Institute, Professional Management Program, Pre-Command, and New Warden Training.

The Department of Corrections is the fifth largest prison system in the United States and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and over 150,000 probationers. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
