New Superintendent Named at Columbus Transitional Center - Michael Cannon Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. —— Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner  Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Michael Cannon as Superintendent of Columbus Transitional Center effective February 1, 2015. As Superintendent, Cannon will be responsible for overseeing 140 staff members and 40 minimum security male offenders.

“Michael is a dedicated employee who has excelled through the ranks during his 26 year career with the Department. I am confident he will do a great job in his new role at the Columbus Transitional Center” said Commissioner Homer Bryson.

Cannon began his career with the Department in 1989 as a Correctional Officer at Lee Arrendale State Prison. In 1992, Cannon was promoted to Sergeant at Rockdale Probation Detention Center. In 1996, he was promoted to Lieutenant of Calhoun State Prison. In 2001, Cannon transferred to Columbus Diversion Center to serve as a Correctional Officer. In 2005, Cannon was promoted to Lieutenant of Phillips State Prison. In 2008, he was promoted to Security Chief of Phillips Transitional Center and in 2010, he was promoted to Unit Manager of Phillips State Prison. In 2013, Cannon was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Clayton Transitional Center, where he most recently served.

Cannon has completed Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), and Professional Management Program (PMP); and Deputy Warden of Security Academy. Cannon is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Criminal Justice through Georgia Military College.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners and more than 160,000 probationers.  It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 12,000 employees.
