New Director of the Office of Professional Development Named - Terry Edge Promoted

FORSYTH, GA. Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Terry Edge as Director of Professional Development effective July 1, 2015. As Director, Edge will be responsible for overseeing the Office of Professional Development, which provides basic and specialized training for the agency’s security and non-security staff.

“Terry is no stranger when it comes to Training, after serving 19 of his 27 years within this unit,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “Having his level of expertise will help us maintain and continue to increase the caliber of our employees.”

Edge began his career with the Department in 1987 as a Correctional Officer at Dodge State Prison. In 1991, Edge was promoted to Public Safety Training Instructor at Washington and Johnson State Prisons. He continued his career in the field of training when he was promoted, in 1993, to the Georgia Corrections Academy where he focused on Basic Correctional Officer Training and Specialized Training. In 1997, he served as Assistant Director of Special Operations in Central Office as well as Commander of the GDC Hostage Rescue Team. Two years later, Edge was promoted to Manager of the Special Operations Training division. In 2007, he became the Assistant Academy Director of the Georgia Corrections Academy, and in 2009, he became Academy Director. Between 1995-2009, Edge supervised and managed agency call-outs to include controlled and unannounced facility searches, riots and disturbances, escapes, high profile escorts and natural disasters. During this timeframe, he also was assigned to state assignments to include the 1996 Summer Olympics, the 1997 search for Eric Rudolph, and the 2004 G8 Summit. In 2011, Edge accepted the Assistant Director position of the Office of Training with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. A year later, he returned to GDC to serve as Director of Audits and Compliance. Edge became Field Operations Manager over county prisons in 2014, where he most recently served. Edge earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Georgia College and State University.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
