Forsyth — Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of James Spann from Chief Counselor at Calhoun State Prison to Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment at Wilcox State Prison effective September 16, 2015. Spann will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of medical, mental health, education and counseling services of more than 1,800 male inmates.

“James has shown great leadership as Chief Counselor,” said Commissioner Bryson. “We know he will continue to demonstrate that same level of leadership in his new role as Deputy Warden of Care and Treatment.

Spann began his career with the Department in 2004 as a Counselor at Autry State Prison. He served as a counselor for both general population and administrative segregation. In 2009 he was promoted to Chief Counselor at Calhoun State Prison where he currently serves.

James received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Albany State University and is currently enrolled at Cappella University pursing a Master’s Degree in Public Safety. His departmental training consists of Basic Management Training, Advanced Management Training, Correctional Leadership Institute and Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment Academy. He also serves as a statewide hostage negotiator.
