Corrections Leadership to Serve with the American Correctional Association

Commissioner Tyrone Oliver and Assistant Commissioner Jay Sanders Elected

FORSYTH, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) announced the recent election of Commissioner Tyrone Oliver, to Vice President of the American Correctional Association (ACA) for the 2023 – 2025 term.  As Vice President, Oliver will serve as one of eight members of the ACA’s Executive Committee, who are responsible to the Board of Governors and carry out the duties outlined to them in the Association’s Constitution and Bylaws.

Additionally, Jay Sanders, Assistant Commissioner of GDC’s Inmate Services Division has been elected to serve as a Delegate for Institutions (Adult) on ACA’s Delegate Assembly for the 2023 - 2025 term. More than 150 delegates constitute the assembly including at-large representatives from every 16 components of the correctional system.  The Delegates study proposed policies to ensure the documents are clear and concise and effectively communicate ACA’s Principles and Vision as well as the collective will of the Delegate Assembly.

“As the accrediting body for corrections agencies across the nation, the ACA sets the standards we should all strive towards and we are honored to serve and represent our correctional colleagues as we share in our collective commitment to public safety,” said Commissioner Tyrone Oliver.

Since beginning the ACA accreditation process in 2017, the GDC has received official accreditation of 41 state facilities, our training academy and central office, with an average score of 98.7 %. All GDC facilities will continue in maintaining accreditation by participating in the robust external ACA audit process on a three-year rotation.
