New Deputy Warden of Security Named at Central State Prison 

Dexter B. Spikes Promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the promotion of Dexter B. Spikes to Deputy Warden of Security at Central State Prison, effective May 16, 2016. Spikes will be responsible for supervising and managing security staff at the facility housing over 1,600 medium security male inmates in Macon, Ga.

“Dexter is committed to helping us carry out our mission of creating a safer Georgia,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “With 22 years of corrections experience under his belt, I am confident that his knowledge will be beneficial to the staff at Central State Prison.”

Spikes began his career with the State of Georgia in 1994 as a Correctional Officer with the Department of Juvenile Justice. After working at various Youth Detention Centers, he joined the Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer at Burruss Correctional Training in 2009. In 2011, he was promoted to Sergeant at Baldwin State Prison. During his tenure at Baldwin, he served as Lieutenant and Chief of Security. In 2016, Spikes was reassigned to Central State Prison as the Acting Deputy Warden, where he currently serves.

Spikes is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Georgia State University, and has received the following departmental training: Basic Correctional Officer Training (BCOT), Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Professional Management Program (PMP), Corrections Leadership Institute (CLI), Auditor Training, Hostage Negotiation Training, and Sergeants Academy.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
