Georgia Correctional Industries names new Chief Financial Officer

Chris Walker Appointed

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the appointment of Chris Walker to Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Georgia Correctional Industries (GCI) effective April 1, 2017. In his new role, Walker will be responsible for the oversight of GCI’s annual budget. GCI is an integral part of the success of the GDC, and employs approximately 1,000 offenders. While incarcerated, these offenders learn valuable work ethics and job skills.

“Chris is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and has worked in the accounting field since 1994, acting as an auditor, a director of both Finance and Accounting, and most recently, a CFO,” said Commissioner Dozier. “We are excited to have him join the team, and look forward to the knowledge and experience that he brings to the table.”

Walker began his professional career as an auditor with the Georgia Department of Audits in 1994. In 1999, he transferred to the Governor’s office of Planning and Budget in the same capacity. He was appointed as the Director of Accounting for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations in 2004, and in 2006, he transferred to the Georgia Department of revenue as the Director of Finance. Most recently, since 2011, he served as the Chief Financial Officer for the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance.

Walker holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Georgia Southern University, and has completed both State Financial Management Training and Executive Leadership Training through the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. He is on the Board of Directors for the State Employees Credit Union, is a member of the Executive Leadership Team for the Carl Vinson Institute of Government, and is Past-President of the Georgia Fiscal Management Council.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
