FORSYTH, GA - The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) announced today that offenders evacuated earlier this week in anticipation of Hurricane Dorian, have been transported back to coastal area facilities.

In accordance with Governor Kemp’s mandatory evacuation order for coastal Georgia, 1,670 offenders housed at Coastal State Prison, and 260 Coastal Transitional Center residents were evacuated on Tuesday, September 3rd.  As of  2:30 p.m. today, September 7, all 1,930 are safely back in those facilities.

“I am proud of the GDC team who worked selflessly to ensure these offenders were kept out of harm’s way,” said GDC Commissioner, Timothy C. Ward.  “Our commitment to the safety of the public, our staff and offenders remains steadfast, regardless of the situation.”

As a reminder, friends and family of the offenders affected may contact GDC’s Call Center at 404-656-4661, for the most up-to-date offender location information.  Additionally, inmate locations are updated on the GDC website at http://gdc.ga.gov/GDC/Offender/Query, approximately 24-hours after relocation.
