Inmate Death Being Investigated as Apparent Suicide

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is investigating the death of an inmate at Ware State Prison in Waycross, Ga.

On February 21 at 1:04 p.m., Correctional Officers found inmate Justin Stokes (GDC#1232725) unresponsive in his cell. Prison medical staff attempted to revive him and he was pronounced deceased at 1:50 p.m. by a physician at the facility. GDC is conducting an investigation into the death, as standard procedure.

Stokes was sentenced to 15 years in 2014, in Houston County, for Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery and Aggravated Cruelty to Animals. Further information and photographs can be found on the GDC website at http://www.gdc.ga.gov.
