Offenders Receive Video Access to Learning Material on GOAL Devices

FORSYTH, Ga. – More than 1,000,000 educational videos have been downloaded by offenders in the Georgia prison system, utilizing the Georgia Offender Alternative Learning (GOAL) devices.  Since Fall 2015, videos in areas of Math, Science, Economics & Finance, Arts & Humanities and Computing were downloaded utilizing ‘KA Lite,’ an offline version of the personalized learning resource known as Khan Academy.

“An average of 2,700 videos are being downloaded onto the GOAL devices daily,” said Commissioner Homer Bryson. “This individualized application is a great addition, as it allows the offenders to reach their educational goals at their own pace.”

Educators within the prison system are utilizing KA Lite as a tool to provide offenders content that correlates with their coursework, thus allowing for individualized focus in areas of concern.

Rather than utilizing KA Lite through traditional Internet access, the GOAL devices provide access to the educational videos through a kiosk. These ruggedized tablets are specifically customized to allow the offender population to access educational materials 24/7, regardless of location within the facility.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
