New Superintendent at Columbus Transitional Center

Gloria Hawkins-Turnage promoted

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier announced the promotion of Gloria Hawkins-Turnage to Superintendent of Columbus Transitional Center (TC) effective January 1, 2017. Hawkins-Turnage will be responsible for overseeing 41 staff members and 138 minimum-security male offenders.

“Gloria is a dedicated employee who is well equip to take on the position of Superintendent at Columbus TC,” said Commissioner Dozier. “I look forward to watching her grow as both a leader and an individual.”

Turnage began her career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 2005 at the Columbus Diversion Center as a General Clerk, and was promoted to Secretary II at Rutledge State Prison later that year. Turnage was promoted to Counselor at Columbus Transitional Center in 2007, and in 2014, she was appointment Chief Counselor at Rutledge State Prison. In 2016, Turnage was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment at Rutledge State Prison, where she currently serves.  

Turnage holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Troy State University. Turnage has completed the following departmental training: Basic Management Training (BMT), Advanced Management Training (AMT), Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment Academy, and National Institute of Corrections Training.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
