Residents Graduate from Construction Ready Pilot Program

Clayton County Transitional Center Partnership

FORSYTH, Ga. -- On March 2, four residents from the Clayton County Transitional Center (TC) graduated from the Construction Ready Pilot Program. Clayton TC has partnered with the Urban League of Greater Atlanta on a 22-day course, training residents on job readiness and leadership skills. The program began on February 5; it also includes assisting the participants with matching them with a construction job. The Urban League is a grant funded program that assists individuals in gaining different trades such as forklift certification and construction certification.

“This partnership with the Urban League prepares the residents who will soon be entered back into society, and gives them a chance to be released with the guarantee that they will have a source of income,” said Commissioner Gregory C. Dozier. “These construction jobs will allow them to take care of their families and help reduce the chances of recidivism.”

The four residents chosen for the pilot program were picked based on leadership skills and a good rapport with staff and peers. On the 21st day of the pilot program, the residents participated in a job fair to match them with a construction company. Ten construction companies participated in the job fair at Westside Works in Atlanta, Georgia. On the last day of the pilot program, the graduation was held, and the residents found out which company they were matched with. All four of the Clayton TC residents received a construction company match.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
