Southeast Regional Office Opens

FORSYTH, Ga. – Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Homer Bryson announced the opening of the Southeast Regional Office in Reidsville, Ga on November 1, 2015. The agency will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 10, 2015 to mark this milestone.

“When I was appointed as Commissioner, I realized the need to go back to regional operations,” said Commissioner Bryson. “Providing a central location for facilities in the Southeast as well as our other regional areas will strengthen and improve prison operations across the state.”

Regionalizing operations will return the agency to a time tested, effective formula for the optimal management of over 60 facilities and 9,700 staff. This structure will provide support and resources, which are closer to field units. Most importantly it will decentralize Business, Engineering, Human Resources, Training, Investigations and Audits, which will give Regional Directors the ability to strengthen and improve prison operations, as they deem necessary. The decentralization of these resources will allow for a faster response to assist field units.

The new structure will divide the agency's functions across three regions, beginning with the opening of the Southeast Regional Office. The Southwest Regional Office is slated to open in January 2016, and the North Regional Office to follow sometime in 2016.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 55,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
