Named Facility of the Year for 2015

FORSYTH, Ga. – The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) honored Walker State Prison as Facility of the Year at the 12^th Annual GDC Awards ceremony on June 9 at GDC Headquarters in Forsyth, Ga. Warden Bruce Lee and staff accepted the award on behalf of Walker State Prison.

 “Walker State Prison has gone above and beyond the call of duty in carrying out our agency’s mission of effectively managing offenders,” said Commissioner Bryson. “They are truly deserving of this honor.”

The Facility of the Year award is presented to a facility that consistently scores well on various GDC report card measures including audits, bed utilization, vacancy rates, and staff turnover rates.  

Walker State Prison, located in Rock Spring, Ga., is a Faith and Character Based prison that houses medium security male adult offenders. The facility provides a pro-social, programmatic environment for change to those offenders who voluntarily request to participate in the program.

Several key officials were on hand for the ceremony, which was attended by more than 200 guests.  Making the award presentation with Chief of Staff Greg Dozier were Assistant Commissioner of Administration & Finance Scott Poitevint, Assistant Commissioner of Facilities Timothy C. Ward, Assistant Commissioner of Inmate Services Dr. L.C. ‘Buster’ Evans and keynote speaker Randall Godfrey.

The GDC has one of the largest prison systems in the U.S. and is responsible for supervising nearly 52,000 state prisoners. It is the largest law enforcement agency in the state with approximately 10,500 employees.
