Contraband Arrests at Calhoun and Smith State Prisons

As of July 2010, The GDC Office of Professional Standards, in conjunction with local & federal law enforcement partners, have investigated or arrested approximately 814 staff and civilians for introducing contraband into prisons throughout the state.

1. On May 1 at Calhoun State Prison, Officer Katrina Favors attempted to enter the facility with two cell phones, one cell phone battery, one cell phone charger, and 105 grams of tobacco concealed inside a Styrofoam cup and plastic ziploc bag. Officer Favors was arrested by the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department.

2. On April 30 at Smith State Prison, the canine unit was conducting vehicle checks at the front entry of the facility, when one dog alerted on a vehicle. The suspicious vehicle belonged to visitor Kimberly Harris. The vehicle was checked and 5 oz. of marijuana was discovered. Visitor Kimberly Harris was arrested and taken to Tattnall County Jail.

The Department of Corrections is committed to identifying and pursuing prosecution of those persons who attempt to introduce contraband into state facilities.
